From the Commandant
Greetings,
As commandant of Howlin Mad Detachment I have many
responsibilities to the Marine Corps League and our detachment’s
membership. These responsibilities give me great pride and a sense of
satisfaction as I am leading an outstanding group of Marines, FMF
Corpsman and devoted supporters of the Marine Corps League. There is
one particular responsibility beyond the mission of the Marine Corps
League and this detachment which gives me equal satisfaction: The
simple act of thanking a fellow service member, past or present, from
any branch of our military, for their service to our country and its
citizens. This is a tiny gesture which takes very little effort, yet
can have such a tremendous impact on the Soldier, Sailor, Airman, or
Marine who is the subject of this appreciation. I am filled with a
warmth when a veteran or active duty service member hears this thanks and I get to watch
their eyes light up. There are many veterans of wars past that never
received much thanks, if any, for their sacrifices. Unfortunately, some
citizens of this country take too much for granted, including the fine
instrument of their freedom, the United States veteran. I call upon
all citizens of this great country to take time out of their busy day
to approach a service member, past or present, young or old, and thank
them for their service. You just might be surprised at what you find
beneath the weathered face of an old soldier, the bright-eyed young
female sailor, or the combat hardened Marine with that thousand-mile stare.
Remember, there is a human being with feelings behind that exterior.
Show your appreciation today.
